E-commerce company Amazon is preparing to replace the engines of trucks in the US fleet with those that run on natural gas.
US online trade giant Amazon has ordered more than 1,000 truck engines powered by compressed natural gas to make its distribution fleet more sustainable. The company told Reuters that the company is undergoing tests to transform vehicles that cause very high pollution in the US fleet. Compressed natural gas (CNG) is considered one of the most efficient solutions in land transportation when it comes to sustainability.
Due to the increase in the number of shipments in 2020 due to the pandemic, the number of trucks and vans in traffic increased compared to last year, and the number of passenger vehicles also decreased. However, this increase means more pollution, as large vehicles cause higher greenhouse gas emissions.
Logistics companies are also trying to create electric vehicle fleets to reduce carbon emissions. According to US federal data, large commercial trucks, which account for 5 percent of traffic, account for 20 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.
Amazon is excited to be testing electric vehicles, CNG and other vehicles, making its transportation more sustainable, according to the Amazon statement. While the company’s sales rose 38 percent in 2020, Amazon’s goal is to become a zero-carbon business by 2040.
